Changing your guitar strings might make you feel a litte uncomfortable if you have never done it before, but it's really quite simple and should become a regular part of your guitar care routine. Before you do anything, first take time to make some personal observations such as: 1. Which way do you have to turn the tuning keys to tighten or loosen the strings?2. How are the strings aligned from the nut to the bridge?3. Which is the heaviest string (6)? Taking mental notes will probably save you some frustration and make the job much easier. Below you will find some helpful steps to follow for changing your strings. Once you've changed your guitar strings a couple of times your confidence should begin to grow and you won't need to refer to these steps any longer. I like to remove all of the guitar strings in order to give my guitar a thorough cleaning, but you can remove and replace them one at a time if you prefer. Guitar Care and Maintenance Tools: - Needle-nose Plyers (to cut string ends)- String Winder- Soft Cotton Cloth- Guitar Cleaning Polish (do not use furniture polish, oils, or wax)REMOVING THE STRINGSAcoustic Steel String Guitar- 1. Using the string winder , begin slowly loosening the string(s) until completely slack. 2. With the needle-nose plyers, carefully grab the string from the capstan (the part it winds around) and pull through the hole until it is free. 3. Taking the string winder again, use the cut-out at the end of it to grab the pin at the bridge. Gently pull the pin until it comes out of the hole. 4. Continue this process until all the strings are removed. 5. Clean guitar surface thoroughly. Classic Nylon String Guitar- Follow steps one and two above. When you come to step three, take your needle-nose plyers and carefully loosen the figure eight knot at the bridge. Pull the string free. Electric Guitar- Follow the same procedure as described for an acoustic steel string guitar. However, if you have an electric guitar with a movable bridge you may want to take it to your local music store and have them show you how to do it safely. If the bridge is moved from it's correct position you will not be able to tune your guitar after restringing it. RE-STRINGING YOUR GUITARAcoustic Steel String Guitar-1. Bend the ball end of the string slightly and place it inside the hole below the bridge. Some steel string guitars do not have pins. When this is the case, just pull the string throught the hole. 2. Line up the string with any grooves in the pin. Insert the pin into the hole, making sure it is secure. 3. Take the other end and insert into the hole on the capstan. 4. Pull the string through leaving a fair amount of slack between the capstan and the bridge. 5. Bend the string at the point it comes through the capstan to keep it secure. 6. Watching out for your eyes, begin turning the key with your left hand. Once you get it started it may be easier to use the string winder. (For safety reasons, you might want to cut off any excess string. I usually wait until after they're all on to do this). 7. As you are winding, apply some tension to the string with your right hand to help keep it taught. Make sure you are winding in the right direction! On the bass strings you will be winding counter-clockwise (away from you). On the treble strings you will go the opposite direction. 8. Continue to wind each string until all the slack is taken up. Do not worry about tuning yet. 9. Cut off all excess string length. Classic Nylon String Guitar- 1. Put the string through the top of the hole found just below the bridge. 2. Pull about 3 inches through. 3. Bringing the string up over the tie block, pass it underneath itself at the original point of entry. 4. Come down over the tie block again and wrap the end of the string around itself in a figure eight type pattern. 5. Insert the other end of the string down through the hole on the capstan. 6. Wrap the string around the back and then underneath itself in order to secure it in place. 7. As described above, begin turning the key with your left hand while maintaining some tension with the other until all the slack is taken up. With a classical guitar you will wind clockwise on the bass strings and the treble strings. 8. Keep the string as straight as possible as it continues from the capstan through the nut and down onto the neck. 9. You should not have any excess string length, but if you do, cut it off. Electric Guitar- Follow the same procedure as described for the acoustic steel string guitar. If you need help re-tuning your guitar please see my free guitar lesson which covers this subject in detail. I hope you found this information to be helpful. Remember, establishing a good guitar care routine will insure many long years of musical fun and enjoyment!.

Baking soda is a common, inexpensive household item that can be used for many kinds of cleaning projects. In an era when we are all exposed to many toxic chemicals, it's nice to know that something so mild can be effective. We actually make a form of baking soda in our own saliva, where it helps keep plaque from forming! Here are some of the uses of baking soda for cleaning:I've long used baking soda and white vinegar to keep my kitchen and bathroom drains clear and fresh smelling. I just put a teaspoon or less of baking soda into the drain and then pour in about a tablespoon of vinegar. I must admit that I am the kind of cook who rarely measures anything, and the same is true for these proportions, so feel free to experiment to find what works best in your sinks. Start small, though -- the combination of baking soda and vinegar causes an active fizzling and bubbling! In fact, that bubbling process is how you can tell if the box of baking soda you've had around forever is still good. Just follow the directions above. Your soda is still good if it bubbles away merrily.Speaking of drains, if your drain is clogged, you can try using a lot more baking soda. One recipe is to pour a cup of baking soda down the drain, then a cup of vinegar. Wait a few minutes, or longer, and then run the hot water tap and see if you have cleared the drain. It could take overnight.Another well-known use of baking soda is to keep an open box in the refrigerator to neutralize odors. Because baking soda cuts smells, it can also be put in the bottom tray of an oven-type electric toaster, to reduce burnt smells. Another smell-removing cleaning tip is to put baking soda into bottles or jars that milk has left a smell in. Baking soda is an abrasive, milder than commercial cleansers. For scrubbing out the sink, bathtub, or shower stall, for getting gunk off the outside of my toaster, and projects of that sort, I find it very useful. Using a rag or sponge, pour some baking soda onto it and then add a little water, just enough to form a paste. Then scrub! You can also mix up the paste in a small cup or bowl and then throw out what you haven't used by the end of that cleaning session. I keep a small container of baking soda handy by the sink, in a closed jar so that the baking soda doesn't cake. You can also use a salt shaker, as you will probably go through that much baking soda before it gets caked up.Pots and pans that have something burned on the bottom call for sterner measures. I admit that sometimes I just reach for my rarely-used commercial cleanser, but the baking soda cleaning method is to shake baking soda all over the burned stuff and then let the pot sit overnight. You can also add a little water and baking soda to the pot, bring it to a boil, and then let it sit.For stained marble, a paste of baking soda and white vinegar can be effective. For washing windows, put some baking soda on a wet rag or sponge.Baking soda also has a variety of uses in keeping your body clean too. But enough! This article is about baking soda for cleaning around the house..

The Coalition of Service Industries, the leading business organization dedicated to the reduction of barriers to U.S. services exports today announced the launch of the "Open Government Project" (http://www.ogproject.org). This innovative on-line resource is designed to promote the awareness of the importance of open, transparent government regulatory processes, and their impact on international trade and investment."Enhancing regulatory transparency has been a worldwide need for many years." said Norman R. "Improving regulatory transparency is a critical step in economic development, and to date there has been no centralized repository of information on this important subject. The Open Government Project fills this void."Based on an initial analysis of fourteen countries' regulatory transparency practices, the Open Government Project has developed the first ever set of global "best practices", which can be applied to any service sector. It serves as an important means of demonstrating to a great many countries that is possible for them to adopt transparency disciplines and that it is first and foremost in their own interest to do so.The Open Government Project is supported by a grant from the GE Foundation. It includes a toolkit with best practices and country analyses, transparency benefits analyses, regulatory transparency implementation pathways, a comprehensive compendium of annotated journal articles and papers on transparency, links to over one hundred other sites related to transparency, and on-line discussion groups.

CAD/CAM Services, Inc., a leader in raster-to-vector conversion services, has achieved the top sales rank in August for the entire United States. Scott Shuppert, President of CAD/CAM, feels this is due to the high quality of their raster-to-vector conversion scans."We have been around long enough, and have enough experience to handle most any project," said Shuppert. "To put things in perspective, one of our Boeing / Vought Aircraft projects this year included taking a major aircraft wing of a 767 that had a hundred drawings over 20 feet long and converting and assembling them into a single Catia 3-D model--all good to within .005 inches. We were one of only two firms in the entire United States with the technology to do this."
In some areas right now, the weather is ideal for sitting outside in the evening -- the bugs have gone and the sky is clear -- but the nights are chilly. Don't let the cool evenings send you inside -- extend your outdoor living season by heating your deck or patio. Different heaters are available for different needs and circumstances. A heater will be powered by propane, natural gas, alcohol-gel, electricity, wood, or wood substitutes such as charcoal or artificial logs. Depending on the size and the heat source, they may warm only a small space or heat a party-size yard. For all heating units to perform optimally, they will need the right location. The ideal site is a combination of walls or fences (to radiate the heat back into your space) and overhead structures that will prevent the wind from blowing directly through your selected area. Here are some tips for effective and safe use:	Wood-burning fireplaces and fire pits are generally the least expensive to buy and to operate. Check for zoning ordinances to be sure that you can burn wood on your property. Some municipalities allow wood burning in a small chimenea unit, but will not approve a built-in or dug fire pit. Wood-burning units range from small collapsible units on wheels for easy portability to huge built-in concrete fireplaces. If you are permitted to burn wood, you are sure to find a unit to suit your needs!	If you have a pottery fireplace, or chimenea, use it cautiously as these units are lightweight and reasonably fragile. To keep the fire from getting hot enough to break the chimenea, it's best to use kindling-size wood.	Many wood-burning units have optional cooking grills so your fire can do double duty warming your toes and your tummy. Try this yummy "pizza" recipe, cooked up in campfire irons.	Any open fire is a potential hazard. Keep any overhead sparks from tree branches or patio overheads, and be sure to teach children proper fire safety.	Natural gas heaters are easy to use but are usually built in and, although bottled gas may be purchased, are best limited to those areas that have natural gas service.	Propane heaters can be economical to operate. Depending on the heat output level you set, a standard propane tank can provide 10-12 hours of heat. Propane-powered "mushroom" or "umbrella" heaters (so called because of their shape) are the best choice for heating large areas. They radiate warming rays from the top cylinder and provide a comfort zone of 12 - 20 feet in diameter. The propane tank is hidden in the bottom of the unit. It's a good idea to put these units away when not in use as they can be sensitive to the elements. Smaller tabletop units are also available. Although electric heat is usually the most expensive, there are a few electric heaters designed specifically for outdoor use. Be sure that any heater that is left outside is rated as such. With the wide selection of outdoor heating devices available, you're sure to find one that right's for you. So heat up the night - and go right on enjoying your outdoor space..

If you have emphysema, chronic bronchitis or asthmatic bronchitis (the group of diseases that make up Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or COPD), you have a few good reasons to keep your teeth clean:	There are over 300 species of bacteria that live in your mouth. Periodontal disease is caused by the plaque producing bacteria.	Studies suggests that periodontal disease may promote the progression of COPD. Bacteria in the mouth may infect the body either through saliva or from breathing into the lungs.	Cytokines are released by the body in defense of periodontal disease. These cytokines tax the body's immune system.COPD sufferers know an ordinary cold or flu can be destructive. Coughs linger and flu turns into pneumonia. The bacteria that cause periodontal disease and are taxing your immune system are breeding right now in the cozy, moist, acidic environment of your mouth. The areas between the teeth are particularly good breeding grounds because the bacteria thrive in the absence of oxygen. Symptoms of periodontal disease are often not noticeable until the disease is advanced. A dentist can diagnose the disease in the early stages, prior to individuals realizing they have it. Periodontal disease is prevented by thoroughly cleaning your teeth. Professional cleanings at a dentist office every six months, brushing teeth twice a day and flossing once a day are recommended. Because it is a laborious task to floss, most people don't. Yet, to prevent and control periodontal disease, flossing is extremely important. Unfortunately, The Journal of Clinical Periodontology reported that for those that do floss, only 18 ? 35% of the plaque between teeth is removed. And oral irrigators can't cut through plaque's sticky biofilm.Even with more tools available to keep teeth and gums healthier than in the past, 80% of all adults have some form of periodontal disease. There are electric toothbrushes, oral irrigators, tongue scrapers, oral disinfectants and even a new device ? Dental Air Force that combines brushing and flossing - available. The Dental Air Force (www.dentalairforce.com) also has an added benefit of aerating the sites between teeth, changing the environment and making it difficult for the bacteria to grow. Whatever method of cleaning used, studies show that oral health is critical to total health. With the cold and flu season here, wash your hands, keep your immune system healthy AND clean your teeth..

That huge elephant, I thought to myself for the 100th time, tethered on that tiny stake. They can weigh up to 7 tons, and there was this huge elephant rocking back and forth, kept from moving more than a few feet by ? an electric fence? 25 armed men? No, by a small chain on a tiny stick. How can this happen? How has it forgotten what it's capable of? This can happen to any mammal, including you and me, and here's how.We have three brains ? the reptilian, the limbic and the neocortex. (See The EQ Foundation Course? - http://www.susandunn.cc/courses.htm ). Reptiles have only the reptilian brain, the primitive brain that keeps the heart beating, regulates instincts, pumps oxygen through the lungs. They're born miniature adults and already know all they're going to learn. So there's no need for parents to teach. Reptiles don't bond with their young; in fact they'll eat them if they don't scurry away. But the little elephant calf is well cared for. This is where the limbic brain comes in, the one we share with all mammals. It's how we bond and where emotions come from. The young calf is cared for by all the females in the herd. They gather ?round to celebrate its birth, trumpeting, and spinning, with temporal secretions running down their temples. They feel the bond. Meanwhile, the mother must get the baby up on its feet to nurse, or it won't survive. It already has to learn something. And in this process, too, all the young females are learning about mothering. The hormones and the limbic brain drive it all. Childhood lasts a long time for the elephant, as it does for the human. They have much to learn about survival and their culture. They're dependant on their mothers, emotionally and physically, for 3-5 years, and often aren't weaned til their 10th year. Why this long dependency? Because they aren't born knowing how to survive, they must learn it. Similar to humans and apes, much of the elephant's brain development takes place after birth. This allows for (and demands) learned behaviors, not just instinctual behavior. Like humans, the elephant is born with minimal "innate" knowledge. For instance, it's only through watching adults the elephant learns its trunk can be used to pick things up, or scratch or drink with. Now what if the young elephant calf, with it's new brain ("impressionable") is captured and its leg chained to a stake in the ground that he can't pull away from no matter how hard he pulls? And at the same time, he's scared. Scientists are discovering that fear and the memory get stored together in the cells for a long time. Once coupled with fearful events, they continue to fire in unison long after the original event is over. At an early age, the elephant has learned "helplessness," that when that thing's on its leg, no matter what it does, it can't get away, so eventually it gives up and quits trying. And there stands that 7-ton animal tethered by nothing, really, except its fearful memories. Has this happened to you? (Think about it.) Could coaching help? (Think about it.).
